Brief: Every year there is an innovation competition among the company’s new intake of graduates. The winner is announced at the annual graduate conference. A video of the finalists’ comments, and a brief overview of their entries, is shown to the audience prior to the prize-giving ceremony.
Solution: The given elements are quite firmly prescribed. I have to interview the contestants (the overseas ones via a satellite link) in the corporate offices on the day of their presentation to the chairman and his team; and all I have to illustrate their entries is usually a PowerPoint. So the challenge is to introduce an element of differentiation to the look of the video every year. For the latest one we showed the finalists arriving at the offices and turned this into a short, exaggeratedly dramatic introduction (which is what you see in the clip).

Comments: A constrained brief can be quite stimulating. It makes you think really hard about what you can do to make it different: particularly when it’s a regular job.
